The 42nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered into Federal service on October 9, 1861 at Camp Vanderburg, near Evansville, IN. The regiment served in the XIVth Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, from Kentucky to North Carolina and was in Sherman's "March to the Sea." The command was mustered out in Louisville, KY on July 21, 1865, having been in service 3 years, 8 months, and 11 days. From beginning service to muster-out, there were 1475 men in the rank and file of which 218 were discharged from time to time for disability, and 629 killed, wounded, or captured.

He died on 13 Sep 1864 in Andersonville, Macon, Georgia. Note from Andersonville Prison Records:

child122 ii. William M. HUNTER was born in 1839 in Columbia, Gibson, Indiana. He served in the military between 1861 and 1864. Civil War, Also in Company F, 42nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Died at Perryville, Kentucky of Typhoid while in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound received at the battle of Perryville. He died on 13 Sep 1864 in Perryville,, Kentucky.

child124 iv. James Middleton HUNTER was born in 1842 in Columbia, Gibson, Indiana. He died on 4 Sep 1864 in Andersonville, Macon, Georgia. Note, source says all three sons died during the war.
